Fees

How fees work

The answers to what people ask before they book. Your fee is given in writing before you start.

  • Insurance we work with

Open Shutter is out of network, so we don't bill insurance plans, Medicare or Medicaid directly. If your plan reimburses out-of-network care, Jamal gives you a monthly receipt to send in. A plan can tell you in one call what it pays back.

    • Out of network

    • No Medicare or Medicaid billing

  • If you pay yourself

Jamal sets your fee by the length of the session, and you have it in writing before you start. You pay at the end of each session by card, including HSA and FSA cards. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open to people for whom the usual fee is a barrier; ask how to request one. Please give 24 hours' notice to change or cancel a session.

    • Fee given in writing before you start

    • Reduced-fee spots are limited

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month you can ask for an itemized receipt, often called a superbill, with the dates and the type of each session. It carries a diagnosis code, which your plan will see. Whether your plan pays anything back, and how much, is the plan's decision.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost, in writing, before you start. If a bill is $400 or more above that estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract, and Jamal can send one before your first session.

  • Checking your benefits

Because Open Shutter is out of network, we don't check your benefits for you. Before your first session, you can call the number on your insurance card and ask whether it reimburses out-of-network counseling, and how a claim is filed.

What sets your fee

Three things your fee depends on

  • Session length

Your fee is set by the length of the session. A longer session, if you and Jamal agree one fits, costs more, and you'll know before you book it.

  • Reduced-fee spots

A limited number of spots are open to people for whom the usual fee is a barrier. Ask how to request one; Jamal will ask a few plain questions and take your answer as given.

  • Changing or cancelling

Please give 24 hours' notice to change or cancel a session. After that, the session fee may apply, and Jamal will talk it through with you first.

Ask about fees before you book

Write or call. Jamal answers fee questions in writing, with nothing booked.
